(1S)-(-)-α-Pinene (CAS: 7785-26-4) is used in the preparation of hydroxy ketones such as hydroxycarvones. (1S)-(-)-α-Pinene is a monoterpene used in industries like fragrance, pharmaceuticals, flavor, and cosmetics. It is a major component of pine oil and turpentine oil. Isomerization of α-pinene yields industrially important compounds like camphene, limonene, and p-cymene. (1R)-(+)-α-Pinene is isolated from gum turpentine oil. it's largely used as starting material for the synthesis of terpineol, camphor, dihydromyrcenol, borneol, sandenol and terpene resin. (1S)-(-)-α-Pinene is widely used in flavors and fragrances. (1S)-(-)-α-Pinene is found in the oils of many species of many coniferous trees, notably the pine and has insecticidal activity. (1S)-(-)-α-Pinene is a monoterpene and shows sleep enhancing property through a direct binding to GABAA-benzodiazepine (BZD) receptors by acting as a partial modulator at the BZD binding site. (1S)-(-)-α-Pinene is a component of pine resin and is a useful chiral synthetic intermediate.
