Application:

4-Methylpyrazole (Fomepizole) (CAS: 7554-65-6) is a compound of heterocyclic building blocks, it serves as an intermediate in organic synthesis, also used as a pharmaceutical intermediate. It acts a ligand in coordination chemistry. Fomepizole was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Dec 4, 1997. Fomepizole is the first drug indicated as an antidote for ethylene glycol poisoning. It was developed and marketed as Antizol® by Paladin in the US. Fomepizole is a competitive alcohol dehydrogenase inhibitor, Alcohol dehydrogenase catalyzes the oxidation of ethanol to acetaldehyde, and it also catalyzes the initial steps in the metabolism of ethylene glycol and methanol to their toxic metabolites. Antizol® is indicated as an antidote for ethylene glycol (such as antifreeze) or methanol poisoning, or for use in suspected ethylene glycol or methanol ingestion, either alone or in combination with hemodialysis. Fomepizole is a competitive antagonist of alcohol dehydrogenase with a binding affinity >8000 times that of Ethanol.
