α-Cyclodextrin (α-CD) (CAS: 10016-20-3) is a non-reducing cyclic saccharide comprised of six glucose units linked by alpha-1.4 bonds. It is produced by the action of cyclodextrin glucosyl transferase on hydrolysed starch syrups. The cavity of alpha-Cyclodextrin is less than beta-Cyclodextrin, so it is used to allow formation of inclusion complexes with little molecules. The solubility degree of Alpha-Cyclodextrin in water is 14.5 g/100ml @25°C, so the situation that needs high solubility of cyclodextrin.
Alpha-cyclodextrin is widely used in the drugs, food, flavor and cosmetics. Alpha-cyclodextrin is also widely used in the field of pesticide and adjusting the metabolization of the crop and increasing the quantity of the crop. Especially the cyclodextrin and its ramification which developed by these years,some of them are the important solutizer,stablizer, releaser or the assist materials of the Entericcoated drugs,some of them are the materials of organic synthetical macromolecular stuff.
Food grade Alpha cyclodextrin with 6 glucose units has the smallest cavity of the parent cyclodextrins. It is useful for solubilizing,stabilizing or delivering small molecules, e.g. low molecular weight, flavor or fragrance compounds.Food grade Alpha cyclodextrin is being introduced to the food industry as a new soluble dietary fiber with convincing properties.
Cyclodextrin has a hole in the center of the ring structure, and an oxygen atom in which -CH- binds to glucoside. It is sulfur-aqueous, and the hydroxyl groups at the 2, 3 and 6 positions of glucose are hydrophilic. It can be used to complex other molecules into inclusion complexes by a weak van der Waals force. Many substances can be encapsulated by cyclodextrins, including noble gases, halogens, dyes, fragrances, medicines, foods, pesticides and preservatives. After encapsulation, its stability, volatility, solubility and reactivity are improved. The special effect of Cyclodextrin makes it a widely used encapsulation material.
