Ethyl Formate (CAS: 109-94-4) is used as a solvent for nitrocellulose and cellulose acetate, used in medicine for uracil, cytosine, thymine intermediates used as chromatographic analysis of standard substances, solvents and fungicides, but also for the preparation of flavor, acetone substitutes GB 2760-96 is allowed to use the edible spices. It is mainly used for the preparation of rum, apricot, peach, pineapple, mixed fruit and the essence of the wine. occasionally used in daily chemical flavor for modification of flower flavor, mainly used in food flavor for fruit flavor such as cherry, apricot, peach, strawberry, Rubus, apple, pineapple, banana, plum, grapes, etc. It is often used in wine, such as langm, brandy, and white grape. ethyl formate is used as a solvent for nitrocellulose, cellulose acetate, and the like, as well as bactericides, larvicides, and fumigants for foods, cigarettes, cereals, dried fruits, and the like. As a flavor, ethyl formate can be used to blend the aroma of peach, banana, apple, apricot, pineapple, Berry, etc., and can also be used as a flavor of butter, Brandy, sweet wine, and white wine. Ethyl Formate is also an intermediate in organic synthesis. For example, in the pharmaceutical industry, it is used for the production of antitumor drugs fuxuedin and vitamin B1; Ethyl formate and acetone are condensed in sodium methoxide-xylene solution to obtain sodium acetyl vinyl alcohol, condensation with acetylglycine ester followed by cyclization with potassium thiocyanate yields ethyl 2-mercaptoimidazole-4-carboxylate. Ethyl Formate is used in the production of Houttuynia cordata, tongjingning, kangfulong, thiopyrimidine, thiazidine mustard, reserpine, total synthesis of scopolamine and other drugs. The solvent used for nitrocellulose and cellulose acetate is often used as an intermediate such as uracil in medicine. used as a solvent for acetic acid or nitric acid fiber, and for flavor synthesis and pharmaceutical production organic solvent, organic synthesis, wine flavor. Raw materials for the pharmaceutical industry.
The irritant action of ethyl formate inthe eyes, nose, and mucous membranes ismilder than that of methyl formate. How ever it is more narcotic than the methylester. Cats exposed to 10,000 ppm died after90 minutes, after deep narcosis. A 4-hourexposure to 8000 ppm was lethal to rats.Inhalation of 5000 ppm for a short periodproduces eye and nasal irritation and salivation in rats. The toxic effects from ingestion include somnolence, narcosis, gastritis, and dyspnea. The oral LD50 values in various test animals range between 1000 and2000 mg/kg.
Highly flammable liquid. Vapor is heavier than air and may travel long distance to a source of ignition and flash back. A very dangerous fire and explosion hazard when exposed to heat, flame, or oxilzers. To fight fire, use alcohol foam, spray, mist, dry chemical. When heated to decomposition it emits acrid smoke and irritating fumes.
May form explosive mixture with air. Reacts violently with nitrates, strong oxidizers, strong alkalis, and strong acids. Decomposes slowly in water, forming ethyl alcohol and formic acid. May accumulate static electrical charges, and may cause ignition of its vapors
Spray into a furnace in admixture with a flammable solvent.
