Maleic hydrazide is a synthetic plant growth regulator that is widely used for controlling growth and to induce dormancy in some crops. The agent can enter the plant through the stratum corneum, reducing photosynthesis, osmotic pressure and evaporation, and can strongly inhibit the growth of buds. It is used to prevent bud sprouting during storage of potato tubers, onions, garlic, radish, etc., and has the effect of inhibiting crop growth and prolonging flowering. It can also be used as a herbicide or as a chemical topping for tobacco. Most of the use of maleic hydrazide in the U.S. is on tobacco. Production Methods Maleic hydrazide is slightly acidic. It is made by treating maleic anhydride with hydrazine hydrate in alcohol.
