Application:

Methacrolein or Methacrylaldehyde (stabilized with HQ) (CAS 618-89-3), is an unsaturated aldehyde. It is a flammable liquid. Industrially, the primary use of methacrolein is in the manufacture of polymers, synthetic resins and plastics. Exposure to methacrolein is highly irritating to the eyes, nose, throat and lungs. It acts as a raw material of methylmalonic acid, thermoplastic fuel and in the preparation of 2,3-Dibromo-2-methyl-propionaldehyde. Light and air sensitive. Incompatible with strong bases, strong oxidizing agents, strong reducing agents. Store in a cool place. Methacrolein on oxidation over heteropoly acid catalysts (mainly 12-molybdophosphoric acid) at 300℃ yields methacrylic acid. It is the major product of isoprene oxidation.Methacrolein was used to study the effect of parts per billion levels of limonene oxidation products and the terpene oxidation product, Methacrolein on human eye blink frequency. It was also used in determination of rate constants and the products of the reactions between atomic chlorine and acrolein, methacrolein and methyl vinyl ketone.
