Pivalaldehyde (CAS: 630-19-3) is de trimethylvorm van aceetaldehyde.Het is een aldehyde met een sterisch volumineuze R-groep, waarbij de tertiaire butylgroep aan de carbonylgroep is bevestigd, >C=O.Pivalaldehyde is een belangrijke grondstof en tussenproduct dat wordt gebruikt in organische synthese, farmaceutische producten, landbouwchemicaliën en kleurstoffen.Pivalaldehyde wordt gebruikt als stereoselectieve synthesetoepassing.Het wordt ook gebruikt als bouwsteen in aldolcondensatiereacties.Als derivaat van aceetaldehyde kan trimethylacetaldehyde worden gebruikt voor de productie van acetaat.Het kan ook worden gebruikt als voorloper voor de productie van pyridinederivaten, pentaerythritol en crotonaldehyde.
