Silver Carbonate (Ag2CO3) (CAS: 534-16-7), easily turns dark purple or dark gray under long-term light. After heating, it will decompose to produce silver oxide, which is used to prepare other silver compounds.
Silver Carbonate is a mild oxidizing agent for conversion of alcohols to aldehydes and ketones. It is also used as Biological stain and Koenigs-Knorr glycosylation.
Silver Carbonate is not a powerful oxidizing agent but it is useful in Organic chemistry.
Silver Carbonate can be used to make photographic materials such as film film, color photographic emulsion, photo film, etc., for silver plating, conductive adhesive, silver zinc battery, other silver salts and catalysts, for sterilization in medicine, for ceramics, etc.
Silver Carbonate is also can be used as an analytical reagent.
Contact with eyes causes irritation. If continued for a long period, ingestion or inhalation of silver compounds can cause permanent discoloration of the skin (argyria).
Behavior in Fire: Decomposes to silver oxide, silver, and carbon dioxide; the reaction is not hazardous.
Dissolve 53g of Sodium Carbonate in 600ml of water and slowly add 172g of Silver Nitrate in 2L of water solution (10min). Silver Nitrate is slightly excessive. The reaction mixture is vigorously stirred with a mechanical stirrer to filter out the Silver Carbonate, washed with a small amount of acetone to make it easy to dry, and then dried. All operations must be carried out in a darkroom.
