7-Hydroxycoumarin (Umbelliferone) (CAS: 93-35-6) is used as an intracellular pH sensitive fluorescent indicator & bloodbrain barrier probe. It is used as a sunscreen agent, and an optical brightener for textiles. It has also been used as a gain medium for dye lasers. Application Fluorescent brighteners, fungicides, antitrypanosomal, cosmetics, antileishmanial activities, antifungal, antibacterial, antiinflammatory, antiHIV, detection of microorganisms, treatment of impaired neurotransmission disorders, Alzheimer’s disease, vascular and lymphatic edema cancer, early diagnosis of stroke, dental material, drug-coated coronary stent system. 7-Hydroxycoumarin can be used as fluorescent indicator and acid-base indicator. Umbelliferone can be used: · To synthesize fluorescent probes to detect cyanide anions in water at biological pH and for in vitro and in vivo detection of hydrogen peroxide. · In the preparation of coumarin-based polymer as optical data storage material. · As a precursor to synthesize novobiocin derivatives that exhibit antibacterial agents as well as inhibitors of DNA gyrase. · As the starting material to synthesize (+)-decursinol and (+)-angelmarin.
